With the exchange rate between the Australian and US dollars down almost 50% compared to to recent highs, price rises are inevitable, but nowhere is this more apparent than with the grey importers.
One importer in particular is now showing prices over 10% higher on the Canon EOS 1000D than their Australian-sourcing counterparts.
Canon, Nikon and CR Kennedy (official importers of Pentax and Sigma products to Australia) have all taken steps to identify locally sourcing suppliers of their products and alert customer as to the perils of buying from grey importers, and have promised to help local businesses further in whatever way they can. No-one could have predicted, however, that they'd go this far! ;)
Joking aside, Digital Camera Sydney is pleased to see that local businesses might now benefit from the moving exchange rates by using the opportunity to show price-sensitive customers why it pays to buy locally in the long run.
