Yesterday (30th June) marked the official end of the line for one of the most popular digital cameras of recent times, the Canon EOS 400D digital SLR. As more and more amateur photographers move from digital compact to SLR cameras, so the competition at this entry-level end of the scale has become more fierce. The Canon 400D managed to hold its own against competition from Nikon (D40/D40x/D60) and Pentax (K200D/K20D), becoming one of the most popular digital SLR cameras ever.
It's replacement, the Canon EOS 1000D, is something of a surprise addition to the range as Canon had been thought to have announced the replacement for the 400D in the form of the EOS 450D. The EOS 450D features increased resolution (12.2 megapixels) and the popular 'Live View' feature, allowing you to compose your shot using the LCD screen (only recently available in digital SLRs due to the mechanics of this type of camera). The 450D is available now, but the lack of availability of the much anticipated 55-250mm image stabilised lens is impacting on sales.
The EOS 1000D, which is expected to be available mid- to late-July, retains the same 10.1 megapixel resolution as the EOS 400D it replaces. The key differences between the two are the move from CompactFlash type memory to SD (perhaps finally signalling the end of the larger format in digital SLR cameras) and the addition of 'Live View'. The camera is of the same compact-SLR format, which may present problems for those with larger hands.
Prices for the EOS 1000D are expected to start around $750 for the body only option. Single-lens kit (18-55mm), single-lens IS kit (18-55mm image stabilised) and twin-kit (18-55mm and 75-300mm) options are also expected to be available at launch, ranging in price from approximately $800 to $1100 respectively.
In the meantime, you may still be able to find the excellent Canon EOS 400D in your local digital camera store, or online.
