Canon target Olympus underwater

It has always surprised me that the likes of Canon, Sony and Nikon have allowed Olympus to own the underwater digital compact camera market without competition.

Three years ago, when Olympus first launched the mju 720 SW Tough (the 'dog' camera), I had expected a quick response from their larger competitors, particularly in view of their success with this and subsequent cameras in the range. But it didn't come. Instead, Olympus was allowed, by default, to dominate the beach, slopes and surf.

But that reign is about to come under attack with the launch of the Canon PowerShot D10. Waterproof to 10m, freezeproof to -10C and shockproof to 1m, the D10 is very much in the model of Olympus Tough range.

Australian pricing isn't yet available, but I suspect this will be cheaper than the Olympus mju 8000 SW at $559, as Canon need to play catch-up. Both cameras will be available at around the same time (mid- to late-March) and gunning for the same market.

Will this move by Canon stir Sony and Nikon into action?
