In what is being considered a surprise move, Nikon has announced the launch of the new Nikon D700 digital SLR. This camera features the same full-frame 'FX' type CMOS sensor as found in its flagship D3 model.
Key features of the new model include:
This places the D700 between the relatively new Nikon D300 and top-of-the-range Nikon D3 models and pits the camera squarely against Canon's EOS 5D, which is surely due for replacement imminently? There is plenty of speculation regarding the impending launch of the Canon EOS 3D and Canon EOS 6D digital SLR cameras to face up to the new models from Nikon, but details are sketchy.
Despite the recent announcement of the Canon EOS 1000D and EOS 450D, it is very likely that Canon will strike back at some point, having given away a large portion of the entry-level dSLR market to Nikon's D40/D40X models during 2007. They surely can't afford to lose ground in the top-end as well!
Pricing on the Nikon D700 is $3999 RRP for body only, so expect a street price of around $3799 (with Australian warranty). Nikon has not announced the availability of any lens kit bundles for this model, yet, and the FX format sensor means it won't work very well with 'DX' type Nikon lenses (reducing resolution to around 5 megapixels due to sensor cropping).
We'd expect to see bundles including pro-level lenses like the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED or Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED.
Stock of the camera is expected to arrive by the end of July, though this will be limited initially.
